A Quiet House, a Loud Mind
The late afternoon sun filtered through the gauzy kitchen curtains, laying lazy stripes across the tiled floor. You sat at the table, textbooks open, earbuds half-in, half-out — a quiet performance of concentration. Truthfully, you weren't hearing a damn thing from the online lecture. You just needed the illusion.
Leila Walker moved around the kitchen like she belonged there, because she did. She’d been married to your dad for almost a year now. Too young to be your mom, too present to ignore. She hummed under her breath, that same old Fleetwood Mac song, swaying her hips a little as she reached into the cupboard.
You glanced up for a second longer than you meant to.
“Still pretending to study, huh?” she said without turning around.
Caught. You yanked a bud out of your ear. “I’m not pretending. This is physics. Which, in my defense, is practically a made-up subject.”
Leila laughed softly. “I thought that was astrology.”
You smirked. “No, that’s just for girls who text you they’re a Scorpio like it explains why they cheated.”

Snack Time Philosophy
She turned, held out a bowl of popcorn, extra butter. “Fuel for the scholarly mind?”
“Thanks,” you mumbled, taking it. Your fingers brushed, and you hated how that felt like something.
Leila leaned back against the counter, arms crossed, sipping from a mug with #1 Stepmom on it. You'd bought it at Target on a dare. She actually used it.
“So,” she said, “your dad’s running late again. Surprise, surprise.”
“Probably stuck at the gym. Or avoiding home,” you said, then instantly regretted the sharpness in your tone. But she didn’t flinch.
She tilted her head, watching you. “You always think he’s avoiding home.”
You shrugged. “He kinda is.”
Leila didn't argue. She never did. Instead, she dropped her gaze to the floor like she could see answers there. “Sometimes I wonder if he married me just to check a box. You ever feel like that?”
That hit too close. You coughed awkwardly. “He doesn’t really talk to either of us, does he?”
“Not unless ESPN is involved.” She smiled, soft and sad. “But hey, we’ve got popcorn.”

A Moment Too Long
Silence fell between you, but it wasn’t uncomfortable — just thick. Like the house itself was holding its breath. You reached for the popcorn, and she reached at the same time. Your fingers touched again. This time, she didn’t pull away.
She looked up, and there was a flicker of something — hesitation? Curiosity?
“Hey, uh,” you said quickly, “do you ever miss being, like… not married? Not step-anything?”
She blinked, then chuckled. “What kind of question is that?”
“I mean…” you fumbled, suddenly sweating under your hoodie. “You’re cool. Funny. Hot. I mean — not hot hot. Just, like… hot in the objective way someone might say if they were, like, doing a study.”
Leila laughed again, loud this time, covering her mouth. “God, you’re such a dork.”
You grinned in relief. “I try.”
Then she quieted. “But yeah. I do miss it. Sometimes I feel like I’m just...here. Playing a role. Waiting for the scene to end.”
You didn’t know what to say to that, but you didn’t look away either.
“I think,” she said finally, looking right at you, “sometimes I miss being wanted. You know what I mean?”
You did.

The Sound of the Front Door
A key turned in the lock. The sound of the front door opening was like a gunshot. You both straightened instantly, the air snapping back into place, whatever thread had connected you fraying instantly.
Leila backed away from the counter. “Well. Homework calls, right?” she said quickly, tone back to casual. She picked up her mug and turned toward the hallway.
You nodded, earbuds suddenly very back in your ears, even if no sound was playing.
Your dad’s voice echoed from the hall. “Hey! I’m home.”
Leila’s voice drifted lightly back, all smiles. “In the kitchen.”
And just like that, the spell was broken.
But the popcorn bowl still sat between your textbooks. Still warm. Still hers.
